Yakov Sverdlov was called "the black devil of the revolution" by his enemies, and "the main party organizer" by his friends and associates. The Nizhny Novgorod boy, a failed pharmacist, became the Bolsheviks' brightest prodigy during the First Russian Revolution. At the age of twenty, Comrade Andrei Uralsky headed the party organizations of Yekaterinburg and Perm. He was not broken neither by prisons nor exile - Yakov fled at the first opportunity, and when there was no such opportunity, engaged in self-education and taught hundreds of followers. Not least thanks to Sverdlov's efforts, the Bolsheviks were able to carry out the October Revolution and completely take power in the country into their own hands. Now most of our contemporaries consider Yakov Sverdlov to be only one of a succession of fiery revolutionaries, whereas it was he who became the architect of the system of executive power and the actual author of the first Soviet Constitution. The governing mechanisms he created survived the change of epochs and migrated from the Soviet Union to the Russian Federation in a little changed form. Yakov Sverdlov lived only 33 years, but his life path was incredibly rich in events of a global scale, in which comrade Andrew was not only a participant, but also an inspirer. The fascinating biography of the second man in the hierarchy of the Soviet state after Lenin holds many lessons for the present and the future.
