Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890–1937) was an American writer, editor, and journalist. He was born in Providence, the only child in a wealthy family. When Howard was very young, his father was struck down by mental illness; the man was placed in a mental hospital, where he died five years later. From then on, Howard lived with his mother in her parents' house. He learned to read and write early, memorizing classic poems at the age of two, and began to compose his own at the age of six. Howard's favorite place in the house was his grandfather's library. He spent a lot of time there, showing a particular interest in folklore and mythology. With the death of his grandfather, Lovecraft began to experience financial difficulties. His dreams of going to university were not destined to come true: due to a nervous breakdown, he was unable to finish school, which he was very ashamed of. He earned a living by editing materials for magazines and publishing his own works. The income was modest, and Howard and his mother barely made ends meet. In 1919, the writer's mother was admitted to the same psychiatric hospital where Howard's father had been treated, and she died two years later. This was a great loss for Lovecraft. He threw himself into his work, and in 1924 he married. The marriage brought bright colors to his life; the couple moved to New York, where the writer made acquaintances among writers and booksellers. However, the dire financial situation soon forced the couple to separate, and Lovecraft, not wanting to remain alone in a strange city, returned to Providence. This period was especially fruitful for him: his most famous stories were written, and he actively corresponded with many friends. Two of these friends, August Derleth and Donald Wandrei, founded the Arkham House publishing house after the writer's death to publish Lovecraft's works in hardcover, previously published only in various magazines. Thus, the work of the founder of horror literature was saved from oblivion.

Illustrations for the works in the collection were made by various artists for American publications of the early 20th century.

Lovecraft's contribution to world literature influenced not only subsequent generations of writers, but also the entire popular culture. He sought to create a new, unique literary style, full of mysticism, fate, superstition and fear of the unknown. In his stories, familiar reality is questioned, its boundaries are blurred, lifting the curtain on the primordial horror of the world. This collection presents thirty-one stories by the great writer. To better understand these mysterious and frightening stories, readers can look at the illustrations that adorned Lovecraft's works in American publications at the beginning of the 20th century.
