On May 25, 1928, the Italian research airship returning from the North Pole was caught in a storm and crashed in the ice. After his disappearance, the whole world breathlessly followed the largest rescue operation in the history of Arctic exploration for several weeks.

The first signal of the radio station of surviving polar explorers managed to catch the Soviet amateur radio Nikolai Schmidt. It happened on June 3. The famous conqueror of the poles Roald Amundsen, who helped to conduct the search, soon disappeared in the icy desert. On June 23, the Swedish pilot managed to remove the expedition leader Umberto Nobile from the ice, and only in July the remaining polar explorers were saved by the Soviet icebreaker Krasin.

Combining the testimonies of the crash victims and those who came to their aid, the author of the book tells a fascinating story of disaster, heroic search and rescue, which occurred when the brilliance and boundless courage of the airship era faced the harsh reality of the Arctic.
