The parable "Rabbits and boas" was, like most of Iskander's masterpieces of the "Soviet" period, written "on the desk", first published abroad, only to be presented to Russian readers in 1986 - and produced a scandal comparable only to the lifetime publications of Saltykov-Shchedrin's sarcastic fairy tales. What is the basis for the power of powerful boas over naive, simple-minded rabbits? Fear - blinding, irrational, constraining fear. What is the idea of a fiercely brave rabbit trying to throw off this bloodthirsty power? On the simple denial of fear - after all, what is there to frighten those who have nothing to lose? But why are rabbits even more dissatisfied with such a revolutionary idea than their creeping masters and executioners? Could it be because they themselves, accustomed to living in the "small but charming injustice" of theft and bribery, fear the change of power much more than the possibility of being eaten?
