"Red" is the fourth book by M. Pastoureau from the large-scale history of color in Western European societies ("Blue", "Black", "Green" have already been published by "New Literary Review"). Noble and majestic, full of life, energetic and even aggressive, red was the first color that man learned to make and divide into shades. Until relatively recently, it was he who remained the most sought-after and occupied the highest position in the color hierarchy. So why is it believed that red wine is more invigorating than white wine? Is red meat more nutritious? Does red lipstick beautify a woman better than other shades? Red cars - remember "Ferrari" and "Maserati" - are faster than others, and in sports, as legend has it, players in red jerseys morally suppress opponents, so their team loses less often? French historian M. Pastoureau tries to answer these and other questions, to understand where such an unquestioning belief in the powerful red comes from, and to find the reasons for its gradual disappearance from our daily lives.
