English poet and writer Joan Aiken (1924–2004) wrote fairy tales about simple but wonderful things.
The cat rose on yeast, which he drank with warm milk to cure his cold. The apple pie, which vaguely resembles the well-known Teremok, took off. The King of Grasshoppers plopped down in the porridge of the beautiful but poor girl Bridget and generously rewarded her for saving her from the porridge. The North Wind, in gratitude for rescuing her from the branches of a thorny tree, gave little Laura a magic necklace of raindrops. Little Daisy, forced to play on the dirty construction sites where her father works, suddenly finds herself on the Moon, walking among the moon daisies and riding moon horses.
Whatever happens in Joan Aiken's fairy tales, in the end all good people have a happy life. And as we know, there is no such thing as too much of a good cat.
Joan Aiken's elegant style has been carefully preserved by the English-language literature expert and talented translator Grigory Kruzhkov.
The bright, extremely color-saturated illustrations that instantly capture children's attention are by the artist David Khaikin.
