This book is a grand picture of the activities of the Ottoman corsairs from the Adriatic to Iceland, from the Balearic Islands to the Azores, created by a renowned Turkish researcher. The author has used the widest range of known and very rare sources in English, French, Ottoman, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan, German and Latin to show the multidimensional life of the men of the sea, shrouded in sinister and romantic legends. The main materials are primary sources: ancient documents, old manuscripts, books, most of which were printed in the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries and known only to the narrowest circle of specialists. Several different aspects are presented: cultural (religion, superstition, sexuality, daily life aboard corsairs' ships), economic (division of booty, function of piracy in the developing capitalist world market), social (piracy and banditry) geographical (topography of the North African coast), political (Maghreb's relations with Istanbul) and military (types of ships, composition of the fleet, military strategies used). The book includes color illustrations of the corsairs' ships and features numerous maps, drawings, and medieval blueprints.
