General P.G. Kurlov (1860-1923) is a bright figure of Russian history of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, a military and statesman, governor of Kiev and Minsk, comrade of the Minister of the Interior, chief of the separate Corps of Gendarmes, who rose from a private to a lieutenant-general, endowed with the trust of the tsar, and then an ordinary refugee, forced to end his life in exile. His memoirs were recognized as such a valuable historical document that they were translated from German into Russian and published as early as 1923, immediately after their publication in Berlin.
