"Kolyma Tales", which Shalamov began working on immediately after returning from Stalin's camps and worked on for almost twenty years, from 1954 to 1973, is a stunning artistic and documentary evidence of one of the most terrible tragedies of the 20th century.
The writer divided all the stories of the Kolyma epic - there are about 140 of them in total - into six cycles-collections, the first of which, consisting of 33 stories, he called "Kolyma Tales".
"Planet Kolyma", depicted by Shalamov, is a world in comparison with which Dante's "Hell" looks like an innocent joke. There is no way out. It seems there is no hope. But Shalamov himself - the first existentialist writer in Russian literature - emphasized that in the camp there is an opportunity "to rely on forces other than hope".
The modern reader, familiar with many works of “camp” literature and free from politicized cliches, can appreciate the deep artistic originality of Shalamov’s stories.
