Books for reading are collections of historical stories taken from various sources. These collections were compiled in the process of teaching Russian history in the elementary classes of the Russian Classical School. The presentation of material in Reading Books is fragmentary, episodic in nature, although the arrangement of texts is given in a chronological sequence. On the one hand, these stories can be used for propaedeutic purposes in primary school, on the other - as additional material in the study of history in high school.

The books for reading on history were based on the following methodological principles:
study of civil, ecclesiastical and spiritual history of Russia as a single inseparable process;
The spiritual factor is the leading factor in the national history;
Imagery and emotional presentation of specific historical material are important conditions for the study of history.

The texts of the Books are stories about how the Russian people lived, about how our state grew and grew stronger, about the selfless, selfless service of Russian people to their Fatherland, about their faith in the high destiny of Russia, about their difficult struggle with enemies internal and external.

The first part of the fourth book for reading on Russian history tells about Russia in the early XX century before the revolution of 1917. This short period of time contains such important events as the Russo-Japanese War of 1904-1905, the Revolution of 1905-1907 and the First World War. In the first part, the children will get acquainted with both famous personalities of that time - the Great Martyr Elizabeth Fedorovna, Admiral S. O. Makarov, General R. I. Kondratenko, Prince Oleg Konstantinovich Romanov, pilot P. N. Nesterov, etc., and with ordinary participants in those great events. Stories placed here can be used in the study of Russian history both in elementary school and in high school as additional material.
