"Keys to Lolita" (1968) is the first detailed study of Vladimir Nabokov's most famous novel. Its author, a young American Slavist named Carl Proffer, founded the publishing house Ardis with his wife, Ellendea, three years after the book's publication, opening the door to readers for Russian writers unpublished in the Soviet Union.
Proffer does not claim to offer a comprehensive academic analysis of "Lolita"; he writes lightly and even humorously, emphasizing that he is merely offering his observations on the style and techniques of "Lolita," as well as "keys to some... puzzles" in the novel. Yet it was with his work, highly praised by Nabokov himself, that a thorough study of the celebrated writer's works began. The translators of "Keys" brilliantly accomplished the difficult task of not only preserving the spirit and style of the study but also finding precise correspondences in the author's Russian version of "Lolita" for the many comparisons on which it is based. The unique experience of exploring one of the best novels of the 20th century inspires a sense of discovery and makes you want to read it again immediately.
