This reprint (1st ed.: Moscow, IFES RAS, 2022) of selected works by the eminent Russian sinologist, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences B.L. Riftin (1932–2012) presents works that reflect the author's main areas of research as a sinologist, literary scholar, and folklorist.
Volume 1
Volume 1 includes works on mythology and folklore. These works present theoretical conclusions regarding the system of genres, the mechanism of interaction between literature and folklore in Eastern countries, and articles on Chinese mythology and folklore, as well as oral folklore of the peoples of Central Asia, Siberia, and the Far East, which are important for understanding the general patterns of formation and development of folklore and written literature. Works on the history of Russian sinology and a list of B.L. Riftin's main scholarly works conclude the volume. This publication will be of interest to specialists in Sinologists, historians, folklorists, and cultural studies, as well as to readers interested in Chinese culture and literature.
Volume 2
Volume 2 includes B.L. Riftin's seminal 1970 study, "Historical Epic and Folklore Tradition in China (Oral and Book Versions of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms)." It is supplemented by the work "Legends of Guan Gong and His Cult," published for the first time in Russian, with texts recorded by B.L. Riftin in China as early as the 1990s. Using the example of the analysis of the text of the famous epic of Luo Guanzhong (14th century) "The Three Kingdoms" and oral stories about the Three Kingdoms (3rd century AD), the author revealed the complex nature of the relationship between written literature and folklore, and also focused on the influence of folk art on literary monuments in the Middle Ages and in later times.
