It's the twenty-second century. Africa is in the throes of an ecological catastrophe. The slopes of Kenya's sacred Mount Kirinyaga are urbanized, and the land is poisoned. Vast herds of zebras, rhinos, elephants, and lions—all the fauna and flora of the savannah now exist only in video recordings. But Koriba, a modern and educated Kikuyu, knows that centuries ago, life for his people was different, and he intends to restore that utopia—to found a colony not on Earth, but on a terraformed planet he proudly names Kirinyaga.
As a mundumugu—a medicine man—Koriba leads the colonists. Having restored the ancient customs and strict laws of the Kikuyu people, he single-handedly decides their fate. He faces many challenges that threaten the colony's survival: from a brilliant young woman whose brilliant intellect could threaten their traditional foundations to the intervention of tech support, which has the power to revoke the colony's charter. Meanwhile, Koriba, unbeknownst to his people, maintains a computer link with the rest of humanity.

Ironically, the Kirinyaga experiment threatens to collapse—not because of violence or greed, but because of humanity's insatiable thirst for knowledge. The Kikuyu people cannot stand still in time, just as their planet cannot stop revolving around its sun.

The Kikuyu tribe of East Africa attempted to create a utopia on the terraformed planet Kirinyaga. Everything went wrong. Now, a century later, the Maasai tribe has studied the history of Kirinyaga, analyzed all its mistakes, and is ready to create a Maasai utopia on the planet Kilimanjaro, named after the mountain where their own god dwells.

Recognized for his magnificent imagination and magnificent worlds, and the recipient or nominee of over 150 literary awards for his outstanding works, Mike Resnick has rightfully earned his place as one of the genre's finest storytellers.

The works are accompanied by commentary from the author and leading science fiction writers.
