The book "Cybernetics and the Origin of Information" (1954) by the French philosopher and scientist Raymond Ruyer (1902–1987) is one of the earliest and yet most original studies of cybernetics, critically reexamining its standard assumptions. The author analyzes the differences between carrier and meaning, technical signal processing and psychological semantics, mechanical feedback and human understanding. Combining philosophy, biology, psychology, and systems theory, Ruyer formulates a key question: how is it possible for new information to emerge if machines, according to cybernetic schemas, are only capable of processing existing data? The answer leads beyond mechanistic explanations to an analysis of consciousness, meaning, and creative action, which, according to Ruyer, remain fundamentally human. This translation is based on the second, revised edition of 1968.
