The fourth century B.C. saw the grand expansion of the Greek world. This volume begins with an account of Spartan attempts to consolidate its leadership in mainland Hellas, and ends with the death of Alexander the Great, which came after he had conquered the Persian power and reached India. In covering political and economic issues, this volume covers, respectively, a very wide geographical range, not limiting itself to ancient Greece alone, but exploring also the Near East and the Western Mediterranean. Persia, which returned to the Greek scene in 413 B.C., has consistently remained an essential part of the narrative. A new series of surveys of non-Greek regions, both within and beyond the Persian power, continues such surveys of vol. IV OF THE KIDM. Such accounts in the chapters on Sicily, Carthage, and Italy serve as a reminder that events of paramount importance did not take place only in the eastern Mediterranean. The fourth century B.C. also saw the continued development of classical Hellenic art and the transformation of Greek prose into an incredibly elastic medium of expression. The formation of great philosophical schools permanently guaranteed Athens - in its political decline - the role of a cultural center, and the modes of thought developed there dominated Western civilization for two thousand years.
