The fifth century B.C. was not only the first "classical age" of European civilization; it represented the first and only time, up to the Romans, that political and military power was concentrated in a place that also had the greatest cultural significance. For this reason, this volume of The Cambridge History of the Ancient World does not have the same broad geographical coverage as the previous volumes; the material here concentrates mainly on Greece itself and only in a few instances extends beyond its borders. Although the center of the whole picture is Athens, both politically and culturally, events and achievements in other parts of the Hellenic world are treated and evaluated in the book as thoroughly as the nature and condition of the sources available to modern scholars allow. Two cycles of narrative chapters, one on the emergence and growth of Athenian power and the development of Athenian democracy, and the other on the Peloponnesian War that ended both, are separated by a series of essays describing the artistic and literary achievements of the 5th century BC.
