Second, revised and expanded edition of the Russian translation of the third part of the third volume. It explores the factors associated with the new economic success and growth of young city-states between the 8th and 6th centuries B.C. This was an era of wide expansion and great colonization. Greek polities then established themselves over a vast area, from the Western Mediterranean to the shores of the Black Sea. The book describes the fruitful contacts of Hellas with the Near East and Egypt, describes the importance of western Greece and the Aegean Islands in trade exchange and geographical discoveries, and elucidates the special features of the societies that emerged in the process of colonization. While communities outside the mainstream of expansion and trade activity retained their ancient institutions, those communities at the center of this movement changed their own institutions very rapidly; add to this that the period under consideration was a time of continuous armed conflict in mainland Greece. The book shows how the reforms of Solon and Pisistratus transformed Athens into one of the leading Greek states. The volume concludes with chapters that characterize the social, economic, and material history of Greece in the Archaic period.
