The publication of Volume I continues the "Great Economists" series. It presents readers with a theory of the circulation of material forms of capital, renowned models of social reproduction, and engaging discussions of the laws of capital circulation under the capitalist mode of production. The experience of classic Soviet publications was taken into account in preparing this edition.
The text of Volume I is published with a revised translation of several passages and commentary, freed from the biased assessments of previous years, as well as a new preface by the academic editor.
The second part of the volume contains a large number of valuable texts not by Marx but closely related to the issues of reproduction and circulation and grouped into thematic sections. It also includes the world-renowned review of Volume II of Capital by the German economist and statistician Wilhelm Lexis (1837–1914), which played a significant role in the reception of Marx's ideas in Western academia. The volume concludes with a memorial section, which publishes, with detailed annotations (made for the first time), works by pioneering Marxists G. A. Lopatin (with essays on A. P. Shchapov and I. A. Khudyakov), N. F. Danielson, and V. A. Bazarov. Bazarov's 1915 article "Pioneers of Marxism," chronicling the period of Marxism's spread in Russia, is fully introduced into scholarly circulation.
The publication of the third volume completes the publication of Karl Marx's Capital. It presents a discussion of issues relevant to contemporary scholarship: the theories of production prices, rent, and profit, the concept of the market and crises under capitalism, the formulation and justification of the law of the tendency of the rate of profit to fall, and a number of Marx's interesting reflections on capitalist competition.
In preparing this edition, the experience of both classic Soviet editions and the latest German edition, published as part of the international MEGA project, was taken into account. The text of Volume III is published with a revised translation of several passages and commentary, free of the biased assessments of previous years. The appendix contains excerpts from "The Theories of Surplus Value" devoted to the analysis of D. Ricardo's theories of rent and production costs, as well as a fragment from the chapter on capital from the Grundrisse, relevant to the issues of Volume III. The text of Volume III is accompanied by double pagination in the margins, as well as an index of names, updated according to the latest German edition.
