American writer Lyman Frank Baum (1856–1919) created a captivating world of adventure and wonder. His vibrant and unusual Oz series quickly gained fans worldwide and continues to captivate young readers today. The name for the magical land was coined almost by accident. In May 1898, while telling stories to children, Baum glanced at a filing cabinet with drawers labeled A–N and O–Z—and thus the name "Oz" was born. The first book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, was published in 1900 with illustrations by William Wallace Denslow. The publisher issued a large print run for the time, but its success exceeded all expectations: the book became a bestseller, forcing reprints to be printed. Baum initially had no plans to write sequels, but children sent him thousands of letters demanding new stories. He gave in and became the "royal historian of Oz," a position he held until his death. Frank Baum wrote 14 novellas and a collection of short stories. His last book, "Glinda of Oz," was published after his death in 1920. The publisher then decided to continue the series, appointing Ruth Plumly Thompson (1891–1976) as the new "royal historian." She wrote 21 books, the last of which appeared in 1976, shortly before her death. Beginning in 1904, the remarkable artist John Rea Neill (1877–1943) became the series' regular illustrator. He illustrated all of Baum's books, beginning with the second, as well as Thompson's books and even three of his own works written for the series. His works have been beloved by generations of readers and have become classic illustrations for the Oz series.
This edition features the second and third novellas by Ruth Plumly Thompson about this extraordinary land: "Kabumpo in Oz" (1922) and "The Cowardly Lion of Oz" (1923). They continue the adventures of familiar—and new—characters in the mysterious and magical land of Oz. "Kabumpo in Oz" tells the story of the handsome Prince Pompador, who, on his birthday, receives unexpected news that his kingdom risks disappearing forever unless he marries the True Princess. In "The Cowardly Lion of Oz," readers learn of the danger facing their glorious friend the Cowardly Lion and of the unusual collection that a certain Mustafa of Mudge is eager to add to. These amazing stories are enhanced by the charming illustrations of John Rea Neill.
