The book is devoted to the history of the period of naval confrontation between the USSR and Japan after the end of the intervention in 1922 and until the defeat of Tokyo in World War II in 1945, the events of the Pacific campaign at sea in 1941-1945 and the Soviet-Japanese War of 1945. The authors examine the role of intelligence and counterintelligence of both countries in providing their governments with information about the naval power and intentions of a potential enemy, its influence on operational planning and changes in the military doctrine of the two states.

The documentary basis of the book is made up of previously unknown to a wide range of readers materials from the archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of National Defense and the National Archives of Japan, as well as the Central Archive of the FSB of Russia, the archives of the UFSB of Russia for the Omsk and Saratov Regions, the Archive of the President of Russia, RGASPI, the Central Archive of the Ministry of Defense of Russia and a number of other archival repositories.

How successfully did Soviet counterintelligence counter the Japanese special services, did the Japanese Navy plan to take part in the battles on Lake Khasan in 1938, why did the Japanese fleet not attack Vladivostok in the summer of 1941, under what circumstances did I.V. Stalin not allow the presence of an allied American contingent in the Soviet Far East during the Great Patriotic War, was the Soviet-Japanese War unexpected for Tokyo - readers will find answers to these and other questions in the book.
