What lies behind the walls of a brothel? Some came there out of desperation, others were sold like human beings. In his story "The Pit," Alexander Kuprin (1870–1938) describes the lives of prostitutes without judgment or moralizing—he is an observer, capturing the terrible truth of life "at the bottom."

Through the stories of the heroines—Lyubka, Tamara, and Zhenya—he shows how difficult it is to escape this vicious circle. "The Pit" is not just a story about a brothel, but a powerful social statement about prostitution, the lack of women's rights, and societal indifference.

The story is based on materials collected by Kuprin in Kyiv in the 1890s, but, according to the author, "The Pit" also applies to Odessa, St. Petersburg, and any other city.
