A new book by the Russian historian V.V. Pensky is dedicated to a difficult and controversial time in the history of the Russian state and the person who became the symbol of this time - Ivan the Terrible. The long reign of Ivan IV, in essence, summed up the stay of the Rurik dynasty at the top of the power of the Russian political Olympus. The first Russian tsar completed the work begun by his great-grandfather Vasily II and grandfather Ivan III - the collection of lands and power. He completed the building of the Russian "serving state", which was then repeatedly rebuilt, especially under Peter the Great, and lasted until the second half of the XNUMXth century, when under Catherine II, its gradual dismantling began. This process was complex and by no means straightforward - after the breakthrough made under Ivan III, there was a lull under Vasily III, when both the country and the government seemed to be preparing, accumulating strength and energy before a new leap. The unexpected death of Basil III postponed this process for some time. The author tells about the years of "boyar rule" that came after the death of Father Ivan IV, the period of "interregnum" and timelessness, when the personality and character of the future formidable tsar was formed, and how his path to power began. The author included in his work numerous quotations from chronicles and letters from the time of Ivan the Terrible in order to convey the spirit of the era as best as possible.
