This work by Evgeny Yuryevich Spitsyn, a graduate of the renowned history department at the V.I. Lenin Moscow State Pedagogical Institute, is highly relevant and essential not only for history teachers but also for university professors. In the face of an ever-increasing volume of information on Russian history, which is often pseudoscientific and politically speculative, it provides a comprehensive and highly scholarly historiography—pre-revolutionary, Soviet, and modern—on all aspects of Russian history, from the ethnogenesis of the Slavs to the 17th century. Thus, it represents an excellent historiographical guide that will allow the reader—and especially the teacher, who will soon have to teach from the so-called unified history textbook—to be aware of the main points of view on all aspects of our centuries-old history. Consequently, to some extent, it will help correct and neutralize many of the errors and miscalculations of such textbooks. We've never had such a comprehensive teacher's manual, even though teachers have always paid particular attention to the acute shortage of historiographic information. The author, having worked for many years as a history teacher and principal of a Moscow school, is aware of these issues, which was likely one of the reasons he took on this challenging task, which requires thorough knowledge and the ability to understand all aspects of opinion on a wide range of issues in Russian history. And the author has accomplished this task brilliantly: the book is written vividly, in a well-written style, and everything is neatly and perfectly organized.
