This book is devoted to the history of the study of emotions, one of the fastest growing fields in modern historical science. It is the first monograph to introduce the reader to both the past and present of the field and the proposed direction for its future development. The book is organized around the dispute between social constructivist and universalist theories of emotion, a dispute that has structured research practices in various fields of emotion studies for over a century: social constructivists believe that emotions are predominantly the result of learning, culturally specific, and subject to historical change, while universalists insist that emotions are the same in all cultures and at all times.
The author historicizes and problematizes this binary opposition, pointing out the possibilities for studying emotions beyond constructivism and universalism. In addition, the book describes the history of scholarly reflection on feelings in the life sciences, from nineteenth-century experimental psychology to more recent affective neuroscience, as well as in anthropology, philosophy, sociology, linguistics, art history, political science, and history from ancient times to the present.
