Before you is the legendary twelve-volume work by N.M. Karamzin, describing Russian history from ancient times to the reign of Ivan the Terrible and the Time of Troubles. Thanks to its high literary merits and the author's scholarly meticulousness, this work opened up Russian history to a wider audience. A.S. Pushkin said: "Everyone, even socialites, rushed to read the history of their homeland, previously unknown to them. It was a new discovery for them. Ancient Russia, it seemed, had been discovered by Karamzin, like America by Columbus." Karamzin wrote "The History of the Russian State" until the end of his life, but, alas, he never managed to finish it. The narrative was intended to continue until the beginning of the reign of the House of Romanov, but the manuscript text of the final volume breaks off at the chapter "Interregnum. 1611-1612." The author accomplished a colossal task, systematizing historical sources and presenting them to readers in accessible language. Although the book's language is archaic, it is easy to read.
Book I includes the first six volumes, covering events occurring in Russia from the first mentions of the Slavs until 1505, the end of the reign of the sovereign Grand Prince Ivan III Vasilyevich.
Book II includes volumes seven through twelve. It covers events occurring in Russia from 1505 to 1612. It covers the reigns of Grand Prince Vasily III Ivanovich, Grand Prince and Tsar Ivan IV the Terrible, and the overthrow of Vasily Ivanovich Shuisky, including the difficult years of imposture and the interregnum.
