The course of lectures by Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor of the St. Petersburg Theological Academy Alexey Borisovich Egorov is the third, final part of the series of publications (History of Ancient Rome. Republic; History of Ancient Greece), which presents the main events of ancient history. It is dedicated to the history of the Roman Empire (31 BC - 476 AD) - a huge superpower that became a unique geopolitical association, including the entire civilized world of the Mediterranean and uniting European, Greco-Hellenistic and Middle Eastern civilizations. The book examines the stages of the rise and fall of the Roman Empire: its creation by Emperor Augustus (31 BC – 14 AD), the difficult eras of the Julio-Claudians (14–68) and Flavians (69–96), the rise (96–180), the most severe crisis (180–284), partial restoration (284–378), and, finally, the crisis that ended with the fall of the Western Empire (378–476). In parallel with political history, Roman culture, science, and education are examined, which, in their Greco-Roman form, were the result of the activities of many peoples. Particular attention is paid to the history of early Christianity: the relationship between Christianity and the state, anti-Christian persecutions (1st–3rd centuries) and the role of the Roman Empire in turning Christianity into a world religion. The importance of Roman civilization for world history is emphasized.
