Flodoard of Reims (894-966) was the most important of the first chroniclers of the West Frankish Kingdom, the future France. Flodoard's main works and most important sources on the history of France are the Annals and the History of the Church of Reims in four books. The Annals is one of the few 10th-century chronicles written by a contemporary of the events described, and the only major West Frankish chronicle to survive from that time. The History of the Church of Reims covers the foundation of Reims during the time of Romulus and Remus, and includes the entire Christian history of the city up to 948. This History is a traditional example of the gesta episcoporum (Acts of the Bishops) genre. The reference apparatus of the edition contains notes and commentary on each book, a list of bishops, and a detailed index of names and geographic locations. The book includes translations of two of Flodoard's major works.
