The immortal literary monument — the treatise "The Art of War" by the greatest commander and thinker of Ancient China Sun Tzu (VI-V centuries BC) — is the quintessence of military wisdom, filled with many vivid details and specific examples of the actions of a military leader and his army on the battlefield. It is not known for certain whether the only author of this great book was the military leader of one of the appanage kingdoms of Ancient China named Sun Wu, nicknamed "Sun Tzu" - "Teacher Sun", or whether the "Art of War" brought together the experience of several generations of sages and strategists, summing up the victories and comprehending the defeats in the countless wars waged among themselves by the appanage kingdoms of fragmented China at that time. Another thing is important: Sun Tzu's book set a separate direction in Chinese thought for the next two and a half thousand years. It not only created the basis for the emergence of a tradition of compiling commentaries and interpretations to it, some of which are given in this edition, but also gave rise to a separate literary genre - brief instructions from a sage to a ruler on the laws of governing a country and techniques that allow one to win under any circumstances. The proposed edition contains six more works of this genre, created under the influence of Sun Tzu's treatise.
The influence of this book on the state and military thought of the East is difficult to overestimate. For a thousand years, the rulers and commanders of Asia, planning their campaigns of conquest, turned to Sun Tzu's treatise. It is known that it was highly valued by Japanese samurai. The first professional European reader to apply Sun Tzu's principles in practice was Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. Nowadays, the ancient "Art of War" attracts not so much rulers and their generals as businessmen who successfully use the provisions of the "Art of War" for management and conflict resolution. The proposed edition is accompanied by many unique illustrations, which, together with the text and extensive commentary, allows the reader to unfold an impressive picture of the intrigues and military strife in Ancient China in the middle of the first millennium BC.
