The drama The Temptation of St. Anthony was Gustave Flaubert's last major work. It is the most enigmatic, least studied, and one of the writer's most widely read works. In it, Flaubert lays his soul bare while raising important philosophical and theological issues. In this edition, the text of his drama is translated by Boris Zaitsev and illustrated with works by the talented French artist Georges Rochegross. At the end of the book there are several dozen variants of illustrations made by him for this work by Flaubert.
Flaubert became interested in literature early, while still in his school years. Father of the future writer, head of the surgical department of the hospital in Rouen, was a man with a difficult character. He insisted that Gustave began to study law in Paris, but rote Roman law caused the young man almost physical disgust. Writing has become for young Flaubert that sphere where he could create, freely spreading the wings of his spirit. Inheritance, received Gustave after the death of his father, allowed him to give himself entirely to literary creation. In 1845, while traveling in Italy, Flaubert saw a painting by Bruegel the Younger "The Temptation of St. Anthony". This canvas made a strong impression on him. Depicted by the artist phantasmagoric picture became for Flaubert a vivid illustration of the life of the spirit, surrounded by dangerous temptations of life and the dark sides of existence. The image of a hermit has always been close to the writer; in a sense, Flaubert himself felt himself to be such an Antony. Therefore, he decided to develop this theme in one of his works. As a result, after numerous revisions, one of the most mysterious and little-studied of his dramas was born, which exposes the inner contradictory world of the artist and at the same time raises important philosophical and theological problems of his time. "The Temptation of St. Anthony" was first published in 1874. This work was the last major work of the writer, who died in May 1880 from a stroke. The text of Flaubert's most intriguing work is illustrated in this edition with beautiful drawings by Georges-Antoine Rochegross, who became one of the most original and distinctive French artists who created at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. In 1874, Roshgross lost his father, the young man was then only fifteen years old. A year later, Georges mother remarried. Stepfather Roshgross became a poet Theodore de Banville, in whose house often appeared Verlaine, Rimbaud, Hugo and Flaubert. The inner world of these people largely determined the interests of the future artist. Roshgross became fascinated by antiquity. Success in the Paris School of Fine Arts allowed the young artist brightly and vividly convey his ideas about the luxury of ancient Rome. It is no coincidence that his first large-scale canvas was called "Emperor Vitellius on the streets of Rome". For his success in painting Roshgross in 33 years was awarded the title of Knight of the Legion of Honor. Youthful fascination with symbolism helped the artist when he took up the illustration of "The Temptation of St. Anthony", because the drawings for this work simply could not be performed in a purely realistic way.
