Aron Yakovlevich Gurevich, a renowned medievalist who needs no introduction to Russian readers and the author of numerous works on the history of the European Middle Ages, reveals in this book the characteristics of the personal self-awareness of medieval man. Contrary to the widespread view of the "birth of personality" in the Renaissance, the author holds the view that the human personality existed in the Middle Ages, but possessed specific traits that profoundly distinguished it from the personality of the modern era. Not limiting himself to characterizing individuals such as Augustine or Guibert of Nogent, Abelard or Dante, the author examines the self-awareness of the medieval peasant and townsman, seeking to identify personality traits whose symptoms can be found throughout society, and demonstrating that the history of personality cannot be reduced to the idea of "smooth progress." Particular attention is given to "archaic individualism"—an integral feature of Germanic-Scandinavian society before the assertion of class-corporate principles in the Christian era and the doctrine of pride as the gravest of sins imposed significant restrictions on the expression of individuality. The author believes that the problem of personality could become the central task of historical anthropology today.
