The treatise "Either-Or" ("Enten-eller," 1843) is one of the first truly independent works by the outstanding Danish philosopher, theologian, and writer Søren Kierkegaard (1813-1855). It first presents the famous dialectic of the "stages of human existence": aesthetic, ethical, and religious. The work, signed by the fictitious "editor" Victor Eremita, compositionally combines two parts: the literary and philosophical "notes" of a certain young "aesthetician" and the lengthy letters of his opponent, the ethically motivated judge Willem. Also included is the enigmatic "Ultimatum," which presents a rather radical version of the Christian position. This is the first complete Russian translation of the treatise by translators (the literary edition was first published by the Russian Art Gallery and Amphora in 2011). The edition is supplemented with excerpts from Kierkegaard's letters and diaries, and is provided with detailed commentary and notes. The book is addressed to philosophers, cultural scholars, theologians, historians of European culture and religious thought, as well as all lovers of philosophical thought, literature, and the arts.
