The novel "The Gambler" is not just one of the world-famous works of F. M. Dostoevsky. The text of this novel was a hard-won struggle for the writer, who knew first-hand what the destructive whirlpool of gambling addiction was. Dostoevsky signed the contract to write "The Gambler" to get out of debt, which he had incurred in Wiesbaden, Germany, where he went on vacation in 1863. There, in a very short time, he spent both his own savings and the money of his wife Polina Suslova on roulette. However, the text of "The Gambler" is not an autobiographical diary of the writer. Dostoevsky's talent transforms personal tragic experience into a completely original work, saturated with deep meaning and symbolism.
This collection of the world-famous Russian classic F. M. Dostoevsky includes his famous novel "The Gambler" and one of the writer's last works - the story "The Meek One", which the writer himself called "a fantastic story". The illustrations in the book were made by one of the most talented graphic artists of the first third of the 20th century, Nikolai Vasilyevich Alekseev. The appendix to the collection contains review articles on the work of this master, written by K. Fedin, E. Gollerbach, and A. Kornilov.
