The novel is based on the real events of 1896, when a group of Swedish pilgrims left the country and established a new settlement in Jerusalem. In 1899, Selma Lagerlöf traveled to the Jerusalem colony to see how her compatriots lived. She also visited them in their homeland and met with their relatives and friends back in Sweden. As a result of her journey, Lagerlöf wrote a novel that contributed greatly to her being awarded the Nobel Prize.
Selma Ottilia Luvisa Lagerlöf (1858-1940) was a writer, politician and campaigner for women's suffrage. Lagerlöf spent her childhood on the family estate of Morbakka, and after being educated at the Royal Women's Academy, she became a teacher. While working at a girls' school, she once submitted the manuscript of her first novel to a literary competition - and won, winning not only a prize but also the opportunity to publish the book in its entirety. The Tale of Jost Berling was published in 1891, followed by other novels, short stories and memoirs that have now been translated into more than 60 languages. Selma Lagerlöf was the first woman to be elected to the Swedish Academy and the first woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature.
