We are witnessing a demographic catastrophe. It began in a few developed countries and is rapidly spreading across the world. So few children are being born that humanity is unable to reproduce itself. Leading British demographer Paul Morland argues that this trend will lead to devastating consequences – a shortage of labor, a pension crisis, growing national debt, a deficit of ideas and innovations coming from young people. Developed countries may temporarily mitigate the worst consequences through immigration, but many countries, including those from which immigrants come, will grow old before they get rich. Based on statistical data, the author describes our bleak future, explains its causes and suggests ways to improve the situation. If we do not radically change our attitude to parenthood and do not accept the value of childbearing (pronatalism), Morland argues, planet Earth will soon become uninhabitable.
