Ales Adamovich was a renowned Belarusian writer, World War II veteran, and partisan. At the age of fifteen, he joined the anti-fascist underground with his mother and other family members, experiencing the hardships of partisan life like adults and participating in combat operations. The theme of war occupies a central place in his work. The Partisans duology, a largely autobiographical work, is dedicated to the mothers of partisans. The feature films War Under the Roofs (1967) and Sons Go into Battle (1969) (directed by Viktor Turov, with songwriter and singer Vladimir Vysotsky) were based on the duology. "War does not have a woman's face. But nothing in this war is remembered more, more sharply, more terrifyingly, and more beautifully than the faces of our mothers." With these lines, the first novel of the duology begins. Adamovich later wrote that if he succeeded at all, "it was because my mother had previously written this book with her own life." The partisan theme continues in "The Khatyn Story" and "The Punishers," which formed the basis for Elem Klimov's film "Come and See" (1985), poignant works about the atrocities of a Nazi battalion in occupied Belarus.
