The novella “Lord Novgorod the Great” (1967) marked the beginning of the writing career of the Russian philologist, folklorist and historian Dmitry Balashov, the author of the famous cycle of historical novels “The Sovereigns of Moscow”. The scholar’s first literary experience paved the way for a larger-scale work, the novel “Marfa the Mayoress” (1972), also dedicated to dramatic episodes in the history of the Novgorod Republic.
