"The Mountain Well" is the first and most complete collection of haibun prose, a unique genre of Japanese literature unparalleled in world literature. Haibuns are short, varied works of prose, typically combining prose and poetry. Among the authors of haibun were Basho, Buson, Issa, and Kyorai, most of whose texts are included in this book. The book also features works by other Japanese writers and poets never before translated into Russian.

The translations and commentary were provided by Tatyana Lvovna Sokolova-Delyusina, a renowned Russian orientalist and the author of numerous translations of classical and modern Japanese literature, including "The Tale of Genji" by Murasaki Shikibu (10th-11th centuries). In 2008, by decree of Emperor Akihito, T. L. Sokolov-Delyusina was awarded one of Japan’s highest awards, the Order of the Rising Sun.
