"Deep Mexico" (1987) is a historical and sociological essay by ethnologist and anthropologist Guillermo Bonfil Batalha (1935–1991). This work is a manifesto calling for a reconsideration of established notions of what we call national culture, identity, and civilization. According to the author, Mexico exists simultaneously in two guises. "Imaginary Mexico" is a product of modernization constructed according to the European model—a set of images far removed from the country's actual cultural fabric. "Deep Mexico," the real Mexico, is rooted in millennia-old Mesoamerican civilization. Rejected by elites in favor of the "imaginary," "deep Mexico" continues to shape the real lives of millions of people and the fate of the country. The author challenges the notion of linear progress and offers a different perspective on Mesoamerica's civilizational alternatives, turning to its non-colonial cultures—rejected but not forgotten.
