Epicurus was an ancient Greek philosopher and the founder of his own teaching, which was called Epicureanism. At the age of 32, he started his own school. In Athens, the Epicureans gathered in a garden that belonged to him. Hence the second name of the school – “Garden of Epicurus”, and its inhabitants were called philosophers “from the gardens”. Epicurus preached spiritual serenity and deliverance from the fear of death. The basis of happiness was considered the satisfaction of life needs. Therefore, the students of the school met the saying: “Guest, you will be fine here.” Here pleasure is the highest good”. Of the nearly three hundred works that Epicurus is believed to have written, only fragments have survived. The texts we know today are reduced to three important letters to friends, eighty aphorisms called "Main Thoughts," and several dozen excerpts extracted from his work. All texts are provided with detailed comments and explanations.
