In everyday life, Christians need to read the books of the New and Old Testaments. They can be read sequentially, chapter by chapter, or selectively, as desired. However, it is better to read daily, together with the entire Church, those passages of Holy Scripture that are proclaimed in the churches of God. The Orthodox Church Calendar, "Listening to the Word of God," includes selected texts from the Gospel and Epistle for each day for home reading (translated into Russian). Chapters from the Old Testament are included for the days of Great Lent when the Liturgy is not celebrated.

Beginning with this edition, the texts of the Old Testament parables (from the books of Genesis, Proverbs, and the prophets Joel, Zechariah, and Isaiah) are published in P. A. Yunger's translation, based on the official publications of the Moscow Patriarchate, published between 2006 and 2012.
