"The second book in Stephen Fry's ancient series. It deals with heroes and their exploits. Fry brilliantly retells dramatic, funny, tragic stories. Jason and Hercules, Perseus and Orpheus, Oedipus and Bellerophontes. Mysteries, chases, battles, incredible puzzles, murders and rescues. "Heroes" are stories of those incredible feats, foolishness, acts of desperation and bravery that we mortals are capable of if we are really hot. "Heroes" can be considered a sequel to the book "Myth," where I laid out the story of the beginning of everything in the world, the birth of the titans and gods, and the creation of mankind. It is not necessary to have read "Myth" to understand - and hopefully enjoy - "Heroes," but many of the footnotes will refer you to the edition of "Myth," that is, to the relevant pages therein, and to the stories, characters, and mythical events in the previous book, where you can read them in full detail. Some people find the footnotes distracting, but many readers have informed me that they enjoyed the page-by-page notes in the first book, and so hopefully, in the mood and with pleasure, you'll find them helpful here as well. Yes, yes, some Greek names can make your head spin - all these dilemmas: "K" or "S", "F" or "T", whether you need "-OS" or "-IS" or "-ES" at the end or not. Modern Greeks will be stunned by what we do with their marvelous names, and German, French, American and other readers will be confused by the options I offer. But these are variants, nothing more... you like Tefida or Tefia, Thanatos or Thanatos, Theseus or Theseus - the characters and their stories do not change. Stephen Fry."
