Henry and Beezus, the third collection of short stories by American writer Beverly Cleary, was published in 1954 following the resounding success of her debut book, Henry Huggins. Over the next 50 years, Cleary wrote about 30 books, becoming, in the words of her young readers, "a real living classic."
The book has seven stories. In the first, Henry goes with his dad to the car service. Sitting on the lift in his dad's car, he is horrified to see Ribsey jumping into a police car and pulling out a bag of food. On the way back, Mr. Huggins offers Henry a deal: if Ribsey is diligent until mid-September, Henry will go fishing. If one of the neighbors complains, no. Henry happily agrees: it's like two months to watch Ribsey! But everything is not so simple: Ribsey now and then gets into history. In the second story, Henry's parents instruct Henry to take out the trash. Ribsey believes that the trash is Henry's property and doesn't let anyone in. Rumors are creeping down Clicitat Street that Ribsy is a dangerous dog who attacked the garbage man. In the third story, the parents cut Henry's hair with a stock-bought machine. Failed haircut immediately becomes the subject of ridicule of all the guys from Clicitat Street. In the fourth story, Ribsy helps Henry pull out two teeth. In addition, Henry learns that he is not the only one who will start the new school year with a terrible hairstyle. In the fifth story, Ribsey is accused of driving baby Ramona into a climbing salon on the playground. In the sixth, the father still takes Henry and Ribsey fishing, but the dog almost carries away into the open sea. In the seventh, Henry's dream comes true: he catches a huge salmon. With your bare hands!
