A new book by historian and publicist Natalia Nikolaevna Zazulina tells the story of the life of Grand Duchess Ekaterina Pavlovna (1788–1819). The fourth daughter of the “Knight Emperor” Paul I, the sister of the heir to the throne, the future Emperor Alexander I, she was only a pawn on the chessboard of palace intrigues and state politics from childhood. However, Ekaterina Pavlovna always sought to change the rules of the game and “become a queen.” The only way to the crown for her was a high-status marriage. After all, what union is the strongest? A royal marriage. True, Alexander I showed all of Europe that there is no kinship in politics. But the years of the Napoleonic Wars turned everything upside down. Napoleon himself was secondarily the son-in-law of Emperor Franz II, and firstly a military leader and emperor. Having set off to Europe in search of a suitable match at the height of the Napoleonic Wars, Ekaterina Pavlovna eventually received the coveted crown. But did it bring her happiness?
The short but eventful life of the Grand Duchess still arouses interest and serves as a source of numerous legends and disputes. In N. N. Zazulina's book, Ekaterina Pavlovna appears before us "without gloss", the author offers an objective view of both the main character herself and the events of European history of that period.
