The French Kingdom and the Russian State in the 11th-16th centuries

This book concerns the history of political and dynastic relations between France and Russia in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. These relations began in the 9th century, when the Franks first encountered the Rus', and a little later, the Kievan prince and the Frankish king competed for the hand of a Byzantine princess. The marriage of Anna Yaroslavna united the Capetians and the Rurikids in the mid-11th century, a fact long remembered in France but forgotten in Rus'.

The authors, Vladimir Shishkin and Iskra Schwartz, examine the causes and circumstances of the emergence of mutual interests between the two states, which began to emerge clearly in the 13th century, despite the fact that West and East had finally divided along religious and political lines. The book nevertheless emphasizes that the processes of political centralization and the emergence of absolute monarchy in both countries largely occurred simultaneously, as well as the fact that Russia was already closely involved in European politics by the 15th century, increasingly attracting the attention of France.

The authors devote particular attention to attempts to create a military-political alliance between France and Russia and to organize diplomatic and trade contacts in the 16th century through personal relationships between the monarchs of the House of Valois and the Rurik dynasty.
