In eight essays written between 2017 and 2023, philosopher Yuk Hui discusses the crisis of the Western Enlightenment, the overcoming of modernity, and the challenges posed to the global world by the coronavirus pandemic. He analyzes the phenomenon of neoreactionary thought and rethinks the limits of artificial intelligence, drawing on the Chinese philosopher Mou Zongsan (1909–1995) and his interpretation of Kantian intellectual contemplation. Hui also explores the differences in the philosophical temperaments of China and Europe, tracing the distinctive logic and sensibility of Chinese shan shui landscape painting in the footsteps of the French sinologist François Jullien (b. 1951).
