Konrad Heyden was a renowned German anti-fascist journalist and Social Democrat. He was a contemporary of Hitler and an eyewitness to the formation of National Socialism. Being an implacable enemy of the Nazis, Heyden recorded all the circumstances of Hitler's rise to power. In 1932, his critical History of National Socialism was published in Berlin. In 1935, he was forced to leave Germany and flee to France. A few years later, Heyden published the first serious biography of Hitler in two volumes, for which he was stripped of his German citizenship and property in Germany. Heyden published the proposed edition in 1944 in the United States. In the book, the author shows how an aggressive National Socialist Party grew from a small Munich circle of like-minded nationalists to seize power in Germany. The Nazis' path to big politics was accompanied by pogroms, murders and provocations and Heyden recorded them with the utmost precision. How did the Weimar Republic become the Third Reich in a matter of years? How was the nation of Goethe and Schiller responsible for terror and the Holocaust? Did Germany have a chance to preserve freedoms and democracy? Read about it in Konrad Heyden's fascinating and still relevant study.
