This book examines the activities of the heads of the guard (palace commandants) of Nicholas II in the context of the court and state-political life of the Russian Empire in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In addition to their direct official duties, the palace commandants had the almost exclusive right to make unscheduled reports to the monarch, which allowed them to convey ideas to the emperor and act as consultants or advisors. A wide network of connections within the court and bureaucratic circles allowed the "bodyguards of the empire" to actively intervene in the implementation of domestic policy, attempting to influence the appointment of their protégés to senior government positions, and regulating relations between various court factions. The reader is introduced to the characters of the palace commandants P. P. Hesse, D. F. Trepov, V. A. Dedyulin, and V. N. Voeikov, as well as the heads of the guard who temporarily performed these duties. As personal associates and close collaborators of Nicholas II, they thus constituted the last autocrat's collective alter ego.

The book is intended for both specialists and a general readership.
