Alexander Blok (1880–1921) was a symbolist poet of the Silver Age, writer, playwright, publicist, and translator. The future writer was born into the family of a lawyer of noble origin, a teacher at the University of Warsaw, Alexander Lvovich Blok, and a translator, the daughter of the rector of the St. Petersburg University, Alexandra Andreyevna Beketova. Alexander began writing his first poems at the age of five. His poetic experiments continued during his studies at the Vvedenskaya Gymnasium. In 1894, the poet began publishing the magazine Vestnik; the entire family took part in the young publisher’s undertaking. A total of 37 issues of the magazine were published. In 1906, Blok graduated from the Faculty of History and Philology at the University of St. Petersburg, where he met a number of St. Petersburg writers. Among Blok's most famous works are the cycle "Poems about the Beautiful Lady" (the poet's muse at that time was his future wife Lyubov Mendeleyeva), the collection of poems "Snow Mask", the collection of articles "Art and Revolution", as well as the poem "The Twelve". "The Twelve" (1918) is a famous poem in twelve chapters, telling the story of twelve guardsmen patrolling the streets of post-revolutionary Petrograd. The poem was written under the influence of the events of the October Revolution, became one of the most discussed works of its time and was received ambiguously in society. Its ambivalence provoked criticism from both opponents of the revolution and its supporters. However, there were also those who received the poem positively. Among them were Sergei Yesenin, Osip Mandelstam and other writers. The first separate edition of the poem was published by Alkonost with illustrations by Yuri Annenkov. These illustrations also decorate this edition. At the end of the book there is a large article by Annenkov about Blok.
Yuri Annenkov (1889-1974) was an avant-garde artist, painter, graphic artist and writer, known under the pseudonym Boris Temiryazev. The artist studied with such masters as Savely Zeidenberg, Jan Tsionglinsky, Felix Vallotton and Maurice Denis. Annenkov was multi-talented: he created portraits of cult figures of the Silver Age, illustrated books and magazine covers, wrote articles, memoirs, and works of art. Towards the end of his life, he became interested in theater and cinema: he designed theater sets and drew costume sketches. Contemporaries noted the psychological insight and depth of Annenkov's works. The artist gained wide recognition and popularity in the circles of artists and writers of his time after the publication of Blok's poem "The Twelve" with his illustrations.
