Doctor Faustus is a novel by the distinguished German writer Thomas Mann, a Nobel Prize laureate in literature. In this book, the timeless story of a genius who sold his soul to the devil is transposed to the first half of the 20th century. Composer Adrian Leverkühn, a brilliant madman, sees himself as a second Faust, chosen and damned, and constructs his own life to resemble the old legend. Seeking fame and immortality, Leverkühn replicates the fate of his country: the novel, begun during World War II and completed shortly after its end, became a parable about the historical fate of Germany in the 20th century. Mann admitted that Leverkühn, a man "carrying within himself all the pain of an era," was his favorite character, and he called this book his "most intimate confession."
