Many people are used to perceive Orwell only in the genre of dystopia, but the novels "The Priest's Daughter" and "Long Live Ficus!" will introduce you to another Orwell, a master of psychological realism. Both novels are socially critical, about loners who don't fit into society.
"The Priest's Daughter". England, the era of the Great Depression. Dorothy is the daughter of the Reverend Charles Hare, rector of St. Athelstan's Church in Suffolk. She is a skillful hostess, does good deeds, tries to cultivate only good thoughts, and when bad ones arise, she pricks her arm with a pin. Even as she diligently sews costumes for the school play, she is haunted by thoughts of the poverty that surrounds her and the debts she cannot afford to pay. Suddenly she finds herself in London. She's wearing silk stockings, has money in her pocket, and can't remember her name.... This is a novel about a girl who has lost her memory due to an accident, she rethinks for herself questions of faith and identity in a world of unemployment and hunger. Gordon Comstock - the main character of the novel "Hello Ficus!", quit a good job, moved to a bookstore, where he receives half the money from his former salary. After all, he hates consumer society, material values and the vulgarity of the ordinary way of life, which is symbolized by the ficus on the window. In his reaction to the monstrous system, he becomes a kind of monster himself. Comstock is on his way to the realization that salvation is not found in escaping from life, but in facing it.
